Jim Ferguson talks with Brad Pitt about his role as the legendary warrior Achilles in Warner Brother's summer's epic "Troy".
Jim: Would you agree that a key word to this adaptation of Homers Troy is passion ?
Brad: Certainly, it crosses so many things but definitely passion. Greeks, they love a tragedy. Passion [is] at the base of it that fuels the greed, that fuels the vengeance, that fuels the love. Yeah, I think thats insightful.
Jim: Youve played so many different kinds of characters in your career, was Achilles a difficult one to grasp?
Brad: In some ways and in some ways not. I had a lot of time to prep going into it and there has been so much study done on the Illiad.
Jim: Like Eric (Bana), who plays Hector, said you rehearsed that fight like nine months before you even shot it.
Brad: Certainly a good six months before we shot that scene. Yeah, wed been on it for a long time.
Jim: Give me some short answers on some of my favorite scenes.
Brad: Im bad at short answers, but lets go.
Jim: The beach landing
Brad: ok short answer
Jim: D-day?
Brad: Thats what its meant to embody in a way, but the remarkable thing is that this was done with two ships.
Jim: That is unbelievable
Brad: Not a thousand, yeah nine hundred ninety eight short.
Jim: Preparing for battle - the dressing, the formality of the battles themselves.
Brad: The ritual, I just liken that to any athlete before a big game.
Jim: The boxer getting ready for a championship fight?
Brad: Right, [It's like football's] McNair getting ready to go out with his injuries even though [he] has to give it all.
Jim: The tent scene with one of my favorite actors of all time Peter O' Toole.
Brad: Yeah, mine too. Umm short answer right, Im in the short answers
Jim: Thats hard to do
Brad: It is really hard to do. Hes just a force, hes just an eloquent force. Hes a master from a school Ive havent really been to. Hes just a delight to be around and that scene for me is a highlight.
Jim: Great cast, just a comment. A touch of Ireland.
Brad: With Brendan Gleeson and Brian Cox, not necessarily Ireland but in the vicinity, Sean Bean. We had an extraordinary cast there.
Jim: Yes you did. You did an extraordinary job and I love one line, a line you give to Brieseis played by Rose Byrne
Brad: A gem
Jim: Shes wonderful isnt she. Im born to do what I do or something like that!
Brad: I dont remember it (giggle)
Jim: Well you were born to do this role.
Dont miss Troy you are in for a treat. The performance from this actor is the best.
Brad: Thank you
